Crimson Rhino was the brainchild of Tom Trevarthen who first arrived in Aberystwyth as a student in 2011. Brought up in the East of England he fell in love with Wales and with Ceredigion. As so many students do, he decided to stay. Working part time work while at Aberystwyth University he saved up enough to start Crimson Rhino Cafe. It opened in September 2014 as a smoothie bar with a limited selection of snacks. As Tom’s passion for ethical and vegetarian eating and living grew, so Crimson Rhino began to evolve, adding dishes which soon became firm favourites with customers from toasted ciabattas and burgers to cakes and tapas, including many organic and gluten free dishes.
Alan joined Crimson Rhino in March 2015. As well as being a vegetarian Alan brought his café and business experience, working with Tom to help expand and develop Crimson Rhino. And it’s not just the menu that has changed, we’ve redesigned the interior and created a relaxing garden space. We’ve also added a slightly more formal evening dining service while keeping our friendly informal daytime service.
Throughout all these changes we’ve retained at our core a feeling that we’re doing things a little differently; caring about offering vegetarian and vegan food full of flavour, cooked fresh daily.
